Brazil has been in the news in recent years, hosting worldwide sporting events such as the World Cup and the Summer Olympics. The global spotlight shone on a country that values tradition, pageantry, customs and diversity. The nation has made great economic and technological advances, and the rest of the world has taken notice.
As you search for an au pair to bring into your home to care for your children, consider choosing someone from Brazil. A Brazilian au pair can teach your children much about the world, about the experiences they have enjoyed in a country undergoing so much change and sparking so much excitement, and about the beautiful Portuguese language spoken in Brazil. Your entire family will learn about:
- The importance of football — the game we call soccer — to the Brazilian way of life
- Which icons and leaders Brazilians hold dear
- What it’s like to grow up in a South American country
If you want to find an au pair from Brazil to live with you, EurAupair can assist you. We help families from the U.S. connect with au pairs from South America and other places around the world. Read on to learn more about Brazil and why you should choose an au pair from this beautiful and vibrant country.
The Benefits of Hosting an Au Pair From Brazil
When many people think of au pairs, they tend to think of Europeans. But we provide opportunities for young people from South America and other areas around the world to take care of children and study while living with an American family eager to get to know someone from a different country.
Children Learn Through Play
Your Brazilian au pair can teach your kids games and songs from their native country that will help build cultural bridges. Learning about another person’s beliefs and traditions is a wonderful way to nurture curiosity and develop empathy, traits successful adults share.
Outstanding Educational Opportunity
Kids grow and learn by making connections. They can read about a concept on a page, but experiencing it is an entirely different matter. Culture and language can be difficult things to teach through reading alone. Instead, you want a way to show your children firsthand what it's like to live in another country. If you live, say, in New York City, you might teach your children about other cultures by visiting museums or going to eat in Little Italy.
Adding Brazilian au pairs to your children's daily routine offers a firsthand look at culture that goes beyond what you can convey through a meal or a museum visit. She can talk to your kids about her traditions and family life. They can all learn about each other by comparing what they do for different holidays or to get ready for school. Encourage your child to ask questions and listen thoughtfully to the answers.
Unparalleled Chance to Learn a New Language
One reason many families want to find an au pair from Brazil is to teach their child a new language. Most Brazilian au pairs are fluent in Portuguese, though you can find some Spanish-speaking au pairs. Studies have shown that children have an easier time picking up new languages than adults, and the best way to teach them is through immersion.
Have your au pair speak to your child in her native tongue from the beginning. It will take time, but your child will pick up words and phrases quickly. They can begin to communicate back using Spanish or Portuguese. Within a few months, they will grow their vocabulary and demonstrate huge strides in language usage.
Affordable Child Care Your Child Will Enjoy
Au pairs from Brazil have a major advantage over traditional child care providers. They can take your child anywhere! Instead of being restricted to a certain location, your child can explore your city with your au pair. She can take your child to:
- - Museums
- - Movie theaters
- - Parks
- - Restaurants
- - Libraries
Every day becomes an adventure when you have an au pair who can bring your child around the city. They will never get bored or complain about after-school plans.
Greater Awareness of Global Culture
The world is becoming more connected every day. Technology has brought us closer to people around the globe, and those connections will become even more important as your child ages. Kids growing up in today's world need to understand other cultures and how they fit into the global picture. Au pairs from Brazil can help teach these lessons by:
- - Exposing your child to unfamiliar traditions
- - Talking about the town they come from and drawing parallels to your hometown
- - Discussing historical events from their country
- - Describing the typical day for a child of the same age in Brazil
- - Engaging in fun learning activities, such as crafts, while using traditional Brazilian techniques
- - Showing pictures and mementos from their hometown

Getting to Know Your Au Pair From Brazil
The Brazilian culture is one of the world’s most varied and diverse. Being such a big country, there are cultural differences among various regions of the country. Brazil has many Portuguese influences resulting from the colonial time: most importantly its language, architecture, most of its customs, and catholic religion. Brazilians are considered rather affectionate, warm, and tactile people.
Most Brazilians grow up with music and sports (predominantly soccer). Brazilians take pride in living a happy life and social norms do not consider punctuality as important as some other countries do. Clear communication is important so we recommend you to give clear guidance to your Brazilian au pair.
Family is one of the most important values for Brazilians. Families are usually large, and extended family members are usually close with one another. They regularly meet for family gatherings and meals. Family members are there to support each other in times of need (if going through a hard time, or just helping with child care).
It is very common for young people to live with their parents for a long time. As most universities do not provide dormitories, college students often live at home and commute, sometimes even after graduation too.
Access to post-secondary education remains a challenge, especially for people from lower economic classes. High school students must pass entrance exams to access universities. Those who can afford to attend private schools for their secondary education tend to score higher in their exams; if they don't, they may choose to continue their studies in private universities.
Most Brazilian au pairs will have gained child care experience through caring for their siblings, cousins, nephews & nieces, or neighbor’s children. Growing up with children and having them around is a big part of their lives so you can expect to Brazilian au pair to quickly warm up to your child(ren).
Obtaining a driver’s license can be difficult and is quite costly in Brazil; it costs more than a monthly minimum wage. In addition there are long wait times for driving lessons and exams. We encourage you to discuss your driving needs with au pairs during the interview process.
Learning English in schools is more and more common, although not mandatory in Brazil. Some of those interested in learning the language often attend private schools or take private classes and therefore English fluency can vary from one economic class to another.

I decided to become an au pair because I wanted to experience new cultures and because I believe that children are the best teachers. As a teenager growing up, I was involved in taking care of my nieces and younger cousins, since my siblings were always working. I often took the kids to the park and hosted sleep overs with their cousins and other family members. I like to take them to the local zoo, since I love animals, and helped with their development, like potty training and language skills, as they were growing up. Above everything, the real reason I wanted to become an au pair is because of how many opportunities this program offers to me. For me, the opportunity to come work in the United States, go to school, and improve my English means I have more opportunity to pursue a good career in the future.

This program is an opportunity to show my abilities with kids, to learn and teach them, show and learn a new culture, is an opportunity to be part of a new family, to feel the kids happiness. I work with children since I was 13 years old, I love to live with them because they show you a different way to see the world, with their pure eyes and innocence, its interesting to see you're the mirror of the kids, everything you do is like a reflex, they're always paying attention in everything. To be an Au Pair is more than share a new culture, improve my language skills or develop my independency, is to be open to a new world, to connect with new people as they were your own family. I want to show the children my way to see the world, show all the experience I have and have it back too, because I believe in the same way I've things to add in my host family, they'll have too.
