Art, history, science, the Eiffel Tower, delicious baguettes — France is famous for many things. When looking for a culturally enriching experience for your children, you should consider a French au pair. Your children will enjoy hearing a new language from their live-in nanny while also learning about new things. The wisdom of using live-in child care from France is that you benefit in many ways beyond simply finding a caregiver. Your entire family will learn more about French culture from in many ways:
- Your children can learn about French traditions and experience them first-hand (such as making crepes on Mardi Gras!);
- Your children can be exposed to a new language as your au pair can read them stories in French or teach them the alphabet in French;
- Your family can ask questions and hear from a native how growing up and living in France really is.
When you use EurAupair to host an au pair from France, you can feel secure you’re getting the best possible match for your family’s needs. We have been connecting au pairs from Europe, South America and Africa with American families for three decades, and we know how to find a fit that’s right for everyone.
Getting to Know Your Au Pair From France
The French culture is a mix between Northern and Southern Europe. A live-in nanny from France may be more punctual than a Spanish au pair for example, but will be more flexible on schedule than say a German au pair. Typically, French au pairs will be able to communicate any issues or concerns and will enjoy participating in the family life.
French couples have on average two children. While large families are less common than they use to, France still has one of the highest average number of children per family in Western Europe. French people have rather strong family values and will typically gather every evening as a family for dinner and meet for hours-long meals with near-by relatives on weekends and holidays. You can usually expect your French au pair to enjoy cooking and to participate in your family dinners and get-togethers.
French children will usually leave home at around 18 years old to pursue post-secondary studies in larger cities. They will get their own apartment and become independent at quite an early age.
French au pairs will usually have experience in doing private baby-sitting as well as being camp counselors. The French BAFA is a certificate for young adults (17+ years old) to become qualified camp counselors during holidays or during the summer. Some French high school students receive first aid instructions although it is not a mandatory part of their curriculum.
The French’s driver’s exam (written and practical) is very challenging. One can drive with a parent in the car from 16 years old but the driver’s license can only be obtained at 18 years old. Dozens of hours of actual driving experience is required to obtain a license. Public transportation is well developed in large cities but young adults outside of the main cities will most likely own a car and drive regularly. It is always recommended that you discuss your driving needs with your au pair.
French students are required to learn two foreign languages (starting in middle school) and English must be one of the two. The English curriculum in France will focus a lot on reading and writing so French student will usually be better in writing and reading than listening and speaking. It may be useful with your French au pair to write down any guidelines and schedule to make sure they are understood. Also, it is not uncommon for the French to think that their spoken English is way worse than what it actually is!

One of the main reasons is that I love taking care of children, doing activities with them and having a good time. I think I will be a good Au Pair because I am a big sister and I have a good bond with my little brothers and sisters. I have always enjoyed taking care of them, babysitting them and helping them with their homework. I also have a lot of experience with children, both with my cousins and with children of family friends. My strengths are that I am: open-minded, adapt easily to new environments, curious, creative and inventive, patient and willing to help my host family. I also want to have a good level of English for my studies.

Child Care Experience
I babysat Lilou (11) from 2017 to 2021. I prepared meals and did fun activities. I volunteered at kindergarten with a group of children ages 2 to 5 years old from January to February 2019. I am extremely interested and motivated by the Au Pair program in the United States, to: improve my level of English, but also to meet new people, to discover and share a culture, to live new experiences and to enrich my professional career. I am mature, I adapt quickly and I am eager to learn, I am enthusiastic and optimistic, I know how to be serious and rigorous when necessary. I am a quick learner, curious and very creative (useful to develop activities with children). I create easily links and especially with children thanks to my creative spirit. Moreover, I think that my two previous internships in a nursery school where I was in charge of 6 children from 2 to 5 years old at the same time, as well as my diploma and the content of these courses qualify me particularly for this exchange program.

I would like to become an au pair, to be able to become bilingual, I also want to discover a new culture and new horizons. I like to travel a lot, and I'm not afraid to go far from my comfort zone. I think I am qualified to be an au pair, because first of all I have many experiences with children, I have done many baby-sitting, I have been a scout leader, and I have my BAFA. I am creative, mature and autonomous. I love to cook and bake, I also play music and I like to do sports. I would therefore know how to take care of children, regardless of their age, and I would find games and activities to do with the children.

I prepared their food, bathed them and helped with homework. We also liked to play games inside and outside, painting, singing or going to the swimming pool. I would like to participate in an au pair exchange program in the USA because it is a good way to improve my English. I think that babysitting is the best way to learn a language because sometimes you learn with the children, and also a great way to acquire vocabulary. Babysitting is also a great way to get to know children and be involved with them! I have lots of experiences that would make a good au pair like being a Scout leader so I am use to looking after lots of children. I also have babysat for twins and also siblings. I like to be involved in story time and play games with children too. I have also helped my parents to look after my little brother for the past 10 years! This program is a good way too to discover the American culture and to be immersed in a family will allow me to learn the real ways of life and traditions of Americans.

This summer I will get a psychological diploma. I want to take a year for me, to think about what I really want to do in my life. I'm very interested in pedagogy and children's development so this is really an experience I have to do, and some of my classes mentioned these topics. I already take care of children before and next year I could use my experience with children and everything I learned at college about psychology. Indeed, I studied a lot about babies, children and teenagers and it was fascinating. I also work with children at the riding stables as a volunteer and I love see their relationship with horses, give them advices and see them progress every day.
