What to Expect From Your Au Pair From South Africa
South Africa is a nation of many different people and cultures. Most prevalent in this country are Afrikaans speaking, English speaking and African language speaking people. Afrikaans people tend to avoid direct conflict and will try to avoid “drama”, where English speaking South Africans are more direct about issues. Afrikaans & English speaking people are rumored to be more punctual than their African counter parts.
However people of all three cultures are mostly used to diversity and for that reason open-minded, honest and friendly. They are open to giving each other hugs and smile a lot. In general people try to please each other and are very hospitable and like to socialize. South Africans are entrepreneurial, hardworking and like discovering opportunities in any situations. Also a good moral is important as many people follow religious values.
The idea of the family varies dependent on the social affiliation and descent. Those people who speak some African language mostly have 3-6 children. Those who speak English or Afrikaans often have around 1-2 children. Modern families tend to have fewer kids. However family is important to all cultures. Often Grandparents “granny nannies” take care of the children, while both parents work full time.
Many young people move out of the parents’ homes when they start going to college, some of them move back afterwards due to financial reasons. Studying after high school is very expensive and not many people can afford it. The ones, who can afford the au pair program, are mostly able to afford paying for studies.
A live-in nanny from South Africa is typically advised to gather a variety of child care experience before departure. That includes babysitting, au pair work, and volunteer work at school and similar. Many of the au pairs have volunteered with underprivileged children. Some of them have even participated in the EDUCARE program in South Africa, which is a teaching and childcare course.
The minimum age to get a driver license is 18 years. However, the procedure to take a driver license can take up several months. After receiving a learner’s license applicants need to take driving lessons, afterwards a test appointment can be scheduled in 2-4 months. Most South Africans drive a lot, as the public transportation system is not sufficient.
Most South Africans speak 2-6 languages. Most speak English fluently, even when Afrikaans is spoken at home, the children do still pick up English from the early childhood, so that they do speak, read and write.

Per Reference: "I had the pleasure of knowing Charmonix for the last 6 years. She is a soft and caring person with LOTS of patience. In all the conversations where the topic of children comes up everyone is always referring to her as the “natural babysitter”. Even her sister has a joke where she says that if you need a babysitter, hire my sister. Charmonix has a much younger sister that is now turning 10 next month. They are extremely close and people easily misjudge her as Odeill’s mother because she just love her to death and their bond is unbreakable. Charmonix is loyal, trustworthy, hardworking, and loving. She is fun to be around and are always ready for a joke. She loves spoiling kids, and her passion is children. She is also busy studying to become a teacher for the entry levels at school. The kids at the school where she used to teach just loved her. She is also the responsible one where kids are concerned. She will always be the one to look after the little ones in the crowd."

I chose to do the cultural exchange program because I really love children and I want to experience something different, meet new people and learn new things. My main strengths are that I am patient and love to learn new things. I really hope to gain a lot more insight and knowledge about life in another country, myself and to become more independent in the things I do and choices I make. Gaining confidence in the things I choose to do and in myself, are also goals. To gain so much more experience with the children and to make a positive impact in the lives of others around me as well as to meet different people and learn from their culture is what I am looking forward to.

I have been babysitting since I was a teenager. I am well equipped with knowledge on how to take care of children. I have experience on helping out with homework and school work. I am a fast learner and a good listener, I am 100% hands on when a task is given to me, I will walk an extra mile to help out where I can. I am also very good with arts and crafts and I am able to teach the kids how to play soccer. Ever since I can remember, I loved being around children and helping them in any way I could. I enjoyed every second when I was babysitting children. Being able to be there for them while watching them grow into kind, responsible, and successful people is so rewarding. I am a very open-minded person who likes to learn about other people's cultures. I am responsible, trustworthy, independent, and soft spoken. Every time people is in need of help, I will always be there to walk the extra mile and help in every way possible. This is why I believe that I have what it takes to be a successful au pair in the USA.
